Top of the bill is Charles Hawtrey; not the Charles Hawtrey
of Carry On films fame, but the man from whom he took his stage name. This
Hawtrey was knighted in 1922 after a long and distinguished career in the
British theatre as an actor, comedian, director, theatre manager and producer.
He even appeared in 3 silent films.
The bottom of the bill is Gladys Cooper, and this is
the Gladys Cooper who between 1913 and 1969 made nearly 50 films including
‘Rebecca’, ‘Now Voyager’ and ‘My Fair Lady’. In 1917 she was not only an
established stage actor but also co-manager of the Playhouse Theatre in London.
