I don't see any point in adding to the millions of words that have been written about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon since September 11th 2001. There are words and pictures in this issue of The Mirror that I couldn't bring myself to scan and post, so I will leave it at that.

Obama Inauguration

This US broadsheet shaped newspaper is quite unfamiliar in the UK – our broadsheet size being the same depth but almost twice as wide.

Barack Obama had defeated Republican candidate John McCain at the Presidential Election back in November 2008, but as is traditional, was not Inaugurated until January 20th 2009. He was the first African-American to become President and for many this was far more important than the man’s politics.

There was also a wave of relief that the dark days of Bush’s administration following 9/11 were over. Optimism was the order of the day and Obama the messiah who would lead the America people to a bright new future - give or take a financial meltdown or two!

Although born in Connecticut, George W Bush was raised in Texas and was Governor of the State before becoming, like his father George H W Bush, President. Since 2009 he has kept out of World affairs. Some would say ‘thank goodness’.

There was a sigh of relief heard around the World when George W Bush finally left the White House. I believe that the West was in more danger during his Presidency than at any time since the Cuban Crisis of 1962.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces to fly in combat when the Tuskegee 332nd Fighter Group saw action in Sicily and Italy in 1943.

In October 2008 ex-‘American Idol’ finalist Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and 7 year-old nephew were murdered by Jennifer’s ex-brother-in-law William Balfour. He was sentenced to 3 terms of life imprisonment in July 2012. His father Raymond Balfour was sentenced to 30 years for murder in 1987.

Gary McKinnon was accused of hacking into US Military computers in 2001 and 2002 and, amongst other charges, of deleting important files. In the atmosphere of paranoia and fear that followed the 2001 World Trade Centre attacks the British Government enacted the 2003 extradition treaty with the United States which did not require the United States to provide contestable evidence before requesting the extradition of a suspect. McKinnon and his supporters have spent the years since then fighting against his being sent to the USA.
I wonder how many millions of dollars the US Military spent on ‘security consultants’ when they set up their systems. They should be glad it was someone as comparatively ‘harmless’ as McKinnon who found a way in.

This is the overseas weekly edition of the Daily Express.

Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon married into the Royal Family in 1923 when she got hitched to Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor the 2nd son of George V. When the 1st son, Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Windsor abdicated before being crowned it was up to Albert to become George VI and Elizabeth to be his Queen. George VI died in 1952 and their eldest daughter Elizabeth Alexandra Mary became Queen Elizabeth II and her mother became (you’ve guessed it) The Queen Mum.

She outlived her husband by 50 years and died on 30th March 2002.

Porton Down, where the package of ‘germs’ should have gone, has been involved in secret research on chemical weaponry from as far back as 1916 and has, allegedly, carried out tests on humans. I don’t think Debenhams has.

Both my parents smoked like factory chimneys. I never have. One of my offspring smokes and the other doesn’t. So there may be something in this. Or not.

These items are side-bars to a larger article about the end of the News of the World’s Name and Shame Campaign, which encouraged the revealing of the names and addresses of sex offenders to the public and led to a lynch mob mentality. A classic example of a newspaper-provoked ‘moral panic’ that even led to a paediatrician being targeted by a mob of ignorant ‘concerned citizens’.

This is a list of the 100 favourite films up to 1999 based on reviews on the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com). Having seen 79 of them I note that only 6 of my personal top 50 films of the 20th century appear in their top 50. Does this means that I have crap taste or does the rest of the World?

There are fewer celebrity biographies and cookbooks than these days, although the dreaded Jamie Oliver does appear (twice!). Nice to see Kathy Reichs, James Lee Burke and Thomas Harris representing the Crime writers and Bill Bryson the travel writers, even if ‘Down Under’ was, in my humble opinion, his least interesting travel book.

After the dark days of Bush’s two terms as President things could only get better. Optimism reigned for a while and was only soured by Obama’s inevitable failure to cure all the World’s ills.
He is standing for re-election on November 6th 2012 against the Republican candidate Mitt Romney, an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka The Mormons).

Unlike the out-going Republican President, George W Bush, John McCain had paid his dues. He’d been in the Navy and had fought in Vietnam. He was a POW for five and half years and suffered dreadfully at the hands of the North Vietnamese.

The worst-case scenario was that McCain won the 2008 election but then died and Sarah Palin, as Vice-president, automatically took over. The US (and therefore the Western World) would have a leader that believed that ‘the U.S. Army is on a mission from God’, ‘creationism should be taught in schools’, ‘there should be no abortions even if the pregnancy is caused by rape or incest’, ‘in the right to bear arms’ and ‘Health care must be market and business driven’.

According to the news section of http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/ the work of restoring some of the derelict huts at Bletchley Park is about to start (June 2012) in time for Alan Turing’s centenary. I must make the effort to go one day soon.
